Congenital myopathy with cytoplasmic bodies.
Since early infancy, a 15-year-old girl had suffered from an apparently static neuromuscular disorder that chiefly afflicted her proximal muscles but did not spare her distal ones. Her CPK values had repeatedly been mildly elevated and her electromyogram had been considered "myopathic". There were no similar neuromuscular disorders in the family. Quadriceps muscle biopsy showed a type I myofibe...
متن کاملAortic Dissection of Unknown Origin in a Young Patient: A Case Report
Aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the wall of the aorta, which is rare in the young population. This fatal disorder is hard to diagnose, especially in young patients. We present the case of aortic dissection in a 15-year-old boy referred to the Emergency Department of Yazd University of Medical Sciences in November 2015. The patient presented to our department with sudden acute c...
متن کاملUtility of next generation sequencing in genetic diagnosis of early onset neuromuscular disorders.
BACKGROUND Neuromuscular disorders are a clinically, pathologically, and genetically heterogeneous group. Even for the experienced clinician, an accurate diagnosis is often challenging due to the complexity of these disorders. Here, we investigated the utility of next generation sequencing (NGS) in early diagnostic algorithms to improve the diagnosis for patients currently lacking precise molec...
متن کاملFreeman-Sheldon syndrome: a disorder of congenital myopathic origin?
Freeman-Sheldon syndrome was diagnosed in an unrelated adult man and woman, with severe abnormalities of the extremities but only slight anomalies of the face. Electromyography and muscle biopsy showed a myopathy which was classified as a congenital disproportion of fibre type and seemed to be the primary cause of the deformities. This allowed classification of the syndrome as a separate type o...
متن کاملBenign congenital myopathy with myasthenic features.
It has been increasingly apparent in recent years that in addition to cases which fall into recognizable categories of muscle disease, a number of less common disorders occur from time to time which do not correspond to the accepted descriptions. Some of these appear to be metabolic in origin and can be elucidated, at least in part, by modern methods of investigation (McArdle, 1951) while other...
